Bio

Shonna Crawford’s journey in higher ed began with an undergraduate degree in elementary education at Evangel University where she met her husband, Michael. After graduation, she began teaching third grade at a high-poverty school and during her first three years of teaching, earned a Master’s degree in Reading Education and became a certified Reading Specialist. Shonna soon thereafter became a literacy coach for teachers. During this time Michael and Shonna’s family grew with the addition of a baby boy and then a baby girl! With two preschoolers at home, Shonna left public schools to work for Missouri Reading Initiative (MRI) as a literacy trainer. She traveled to schools throughout Southwest Missouri teaching and modeling reading and writing workshop. In 2015, Dr. Crawford completed her PhD in Learning, Teaching and Curriculum with an emphasis in Literacy and Early Childhood. Currently, she is enjoying her 9th year as Professor of Education in Literacy at EU where she enjoys working with preservice teachers, graduate and doctoral students. Dr. Crawford serves as coordinator of the Master of Education in Literacy program at EU. In 2016, Dr. Crawford was awarded Evangel University’s Orville and Jewel Mills Young Faculty Award. Two years ago, Shonna was welcomed into the 2017 class of 40 Under 40 by Springfield Business Journal. Shonna most enjoys spending time with her family: Michael, Gavin (15), and Aubree (13). She also thrives on leading service trips with a focus on education, serving at James River Church, and leading Evangel’s education department as Chair.
