2002 NAIA-II National Championship Team to be Honored Saturday

Published on Feb 8, 2012 by Jennifer Hall

Springfield, Mo. – Evangel University will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Evangel’s 2002 NAIA-II National Championship and honor the players and coaching staff from that season in their home game Saturday against Graceland.

The 2001-02 team will be inducted into the Evangel Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday marking the first time a team has received that honor from the university.  In addition to winning the national championship, the ’01-02 team finished 35-1, went 20-0 in the Heart of America conference and won the league’s regular season and postseason championship. They are the only men’s team in conference history to win all 23 league games in a season and the Crusaders were ranked number one in the nation throughout the entire year.

The induction ceremony will take place between the women’s and men’s game on Saturday. The women’s game against Graceland starts at 2 p.m. and the ceremony to honor the team will happen immediately after the women’s game.

In addition to the ceremony on Saturday, former Evangel forward Anthony Moore, a key member on that championship team, will be the featured speaker in the Evangel Chapel service Friday at 10 a.m.

Following the men’s game Saturday, Evangel will host a brief reception for the team in the Mabee Student Fitness Center located next to the Ashcroft Center.
