SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Ten students from the Evangel University Social Work Program will attend the 62nd annual North American Association of Christians in Social Work (NACSW) Convention “Renewing Our Hope: Gateways to Change” Thursday, Oct. 25, to Sunday, Oct. 28.
Located in St. Louis, Mo., the conference will offer more than one hundred workshops and poster sessions, keynote speakers and pre-convention training institutes. The conference will be an opportunity for students to network with the Christian social work community and research grad schools.
Students attending include the following: senior Nancy Calkins, senior Jayme Chapman, senior Mehleena Edmonds, senior Brittini Goshorn, junior Taylor King, junior Maria McKinny, junior Lauren Owsley, senior Alyssa Short, senior Kari Tall-Domingos and senior Dante Yanno.
Students will meet others in social work programs from around the country and attend presentations by top Christian scholars. Some of the speakers will include Beth Grant, associate professor of intercultural studies at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, and Dan Buck, executive director of the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation.
“Students will gain a greater sense of how faith-based social workers function in agency settings and discover additional options for graduate school,” said Lacey Nunnally, social work program director.
Col. Stan Remer and his wife Sondra, alumni and longtime friends of Evangel, provided a scholarship allowing the students to attend the conference.
“Stan and Sondra Remer have supported the social work program with their words, wisdom and financial gifts,” Nunnally said. “Without the Remers, we would not have the depth of opportunity for our students.”
Col. Remer has been involved in affiliations of the Veterans Affairs National Social Work Committee, NASW, and served on the Social Work Program Advisory Board at Evangel University.
