Evangel University professor serves as co-editor for book on Amos Yong

August 27, 2013 | Irene Kanthan

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. –– Dr. Martin W. Mittelstadt, professor of New Testament at Evangel University, recently co-edited a book titled The Theology of Amos Yong and the New Face of Pentecostal Scholarship: Passion for the Spirit.

The book, released in June 2013 by Brill, brings scholars together from a variety of disciplines and features their analysis and evaluation of Amos Yong, a prolific Assemblies of God Pentecostal theologian.

The project was conceptualized about two years ago.

“I took on this project because of Yong’s ability to stimulate integrative thinking,” Mittelstadt said. “His work encourages me to live out and express the Evangel ethos to the fullest.”

Mittelstadt collaborated with Wolfgang Vondey, associate professor of systematic theology at Regent University.

“After we sought out contributors well versed with Yong’s scholarship, we provided oversight for the essays and worked with the publisher to finalize the book,” said Mittelstadt, who also contributed an essay of his own.

One particular contributor well-known to the Evangel University community was Jeff Hittenberger, former EU professor of education, who wrote on Yong’s theology of disability. He now serves as provost/vice president for academic affairs at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Mittelstadt earned his Ph.D. in biblical studies from Marquette University in 2001. He is published extensively on the history of interpretation and theology of Luke-Acts in Pentecostalism.
