Alumnus awards scholarships to nine Evangel senior social work majors

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. –– Nine senior social work majors each will receive a $125 book scholarship from retired Col. Stanley G. Remer ’66 and his wife, Sondra (Bettis ’68), during a ceremony this Friday, Nov. 8, at 9 a.m. in the Joust West Conference Room. These scholarships will help students to purchase textbooks for the spring semester.

Students who will receive the scholarships include the following:

  • Lauren Bunch, senior from Laporte, Texas
  • Kadi Cardenas, senior from Thornton, Ark.
  • Shimar Clements, senior from Marietta, Ga.
  • Alyssa Copen, senior from Mountain View, Mo.
  • Chelsea Jones, senior from Park Hills, Mo.
  • Taylor King, senior from Overland Park, Kansas
  • Maria McKinny, senior from New Hampton, Mo.
  • Lauren Owsley, senior from Versailles, Ky.
  • Allegra Thowless, senior from Boise, Idaho

Remer, Stan '07As longtime supporters of Evangel’s Social Work Program, the Remers fund these and other endowed scholarships. In addition, the Remers have purchased professional organization memberships for juniors and seniors and have provided financial support for students to attend national social work conferences.

“We are continually amazed at Stan Remer’s generosity and support,” said Lacey Nunnally, director of the Social Work Program.

In 1990, Col. Remer supported Dr. Billie Davis, professor emeritus, in efforts to develop the Social Work Program. He later helped to see the program through accreditation.

“The Remers have supported the Social Work Program with their words, wisdom and financial gifts,” Nunnally said. “Without them, we would not have the depth of opportunity for our students.”

Col. Remer is a senior regional director consultant for the Reserve Officers Association in Washington, D.C. He has served as a social worker at several Veterans of America Medical Centers throughout the United States.

An active Evangel alumnus, Col. Remer joined the Evangel College Council in 1974, and he served on the Alumni Board of Directors from 1997-2000. He was awarded the Evangel University Alumni Association President’s Award in 2002.

Col. Remer has been involved in affiliations of the Veterans Affairs National Social Work Committee, NASW, and served on the Social Work Program Advisory Board at Evangel University.

Col. Remer met his wife, Sondra, while they were students at Evangel. They have two children, both of whom are Evangel alumni.
