SPRINGFIELD, MO — Dr. Wave Nunnally is the 2015 recipient of Evangel University’s top honor for faculty — the E.M. and Estella Clark Award for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship and Service.

The award includes a cash grant and was presented on May 1, during Evangel’s 57th Annual Commencement ceremony.

Dr. Nunnally is an exceptional teacher who invests time, talent and energy in the EU community, because he values his students and colleagues,” said Dr. Carol Taylor, president of Evangel. “He is a scholar who demonstrates considerable expertise in his field, as evidenced by his many publications.”

The Clark Award was established in 1991 by Dan and Elaine Johnson, in recognition of her parents’ work on behalf of higher education in the Assemblies of God, as well as their special affection for Evangel University. Students, faculty and staff submit nominations, and a committee makes the final decision.

“I am humbled and encouraged by being awarded the Clark Award,” said Nunnally, professor of early Judaism and Christian origins.

“There is no doubt that I still have plenty of room to grow as a teacher, mentor and author, but I am encouraged to continue to pursue the level of excellence that this award represents.”

About Nunnally

A native of Richmond, Va., Nunnally has lived, studied or taught in Israel since 1982. He is highly regarded as an expert in non-biblical Dead Sea Scrolls.

Nunnally holds three masters degrees, and he earned his Ph.D. from the prestigious Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He has also been a member of the Evangel University faculty since 2002.

“Teaching at Evangel is a perfect fit for me, because it is a place where the integration of academic excellence and spiritual vitality is a daily reality,” Nunnally said.

“These have always been non-negotiable components in my own life, and it is a privilege to be in a position to enable students to integrate these essentials into their lives as well.”

Prior to Evangel, Nunnally taught at Central Bible College for 10 years, and he has been an adjunct professor at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary since 1993.

“Wave is fluent in Biblical, Rabbinic and Modern Hebrew,” said Dr. Bill Griffin, professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Evangel.

“He is so well respected in his field of study,” Griffin added, “he was the first non-Jew to serve as the president of the Hebrew Union Graduate School Alumni Association — and that’s a big deal.”
