SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Bill & Gloria Gaither Endowed Music Scholarship was presented to an Evangel University student during the Gaither’s recent sold-out concert in Springfield, MO.

Bill Gaither made the presentation on Sept. 11, 2015, during the Gaither Homecoming concert at the O’Reilly Family Event Center.

The recipient this year was Brendan Kendall, a senior music industry major from Shawnee, Kansas.

The $1,000 scholarship is given annually to an Evangel University student who is majoring in music, with consideration given to those who wish to study songwriting.

2015-09.11 CT, Gaither, Kendall-200dpiKendall is a lead singer with Evangel’s touring group, HeartSong. Last year, he wrote “Restore,” one of the featured songs on HeartSong’s most recent recording, We Give You Praise, which is due out in November.

The scholarship has been made possible through generous, contributions by friends of the Gaithers who are also connected to Evangel University.

The award was established in honor of the Gaither’s lifetime contributions to gospel music, on the occasion of their historic visit to Evangel in 2013. Bill and Gloria were a part of a two-day lecture series on gospel music and worship heritage.

Bill and Gloria have written more than 700 songs during their lifetime. They have earned eight Grammy Awards and more than two dozen Dove Awards, and they have been named “Songwriters of the Year” eight times by the Gospel Music Association.

A video of their chapel lecture is on the Evangel website here.

Evangel offers a variety of degree programs in the Department of Music, including music education, music performance, music business, recording technology and worship leadership. EU also offers two master’s degree programs, music education and music performance.
