EU sophomore receives scholarship from Sacramento County Sheriff

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Joel Sakuda received a $1,000 scholarship from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Activities League this fall, after completing an internship with the Sheriff’s Department’s Youth Services Unit.

Sakuda is the son of Randy and Grace Sakuda, of Elk Grove, Calif.

He is currently a sophomore at Evangel University in Springfield, Mo., where he’s studying for a social work major and criminal justice minor. He also works as a student officer for the Evangel University Department of Public Safety.

The Youth Services Unit works with community youth by helping them to stay out of the local gangs and provides them with mentoring programs. Sakuda assisted the deputies at community events put on throughout the summer.

He was also involved in weekly programs at the Sacramento Boys & Girls Clubs.

The award, named the Nicanor “Nick” Manlapig Memorial Scholarship, after a longtime volunteer and honorary member of the Sheriff’s Association, is given out yearly to students based on academic achievement and volunteer service within the community.

Upon graduating from Evangel, Sakuda plans to attend a law enforcement academy and becoming a certified police officer. He also plans on pursuing a Master’s degree in the future.
