Enhancing alumni relations, advancing your alma mater

Published on Aug 9, 2017 by Paul K. Logsdon

The mission of the University Advancement Division at Evangel is to enhance the image of the University and develop the resources to sustain quality programs through communication, relationship-building and fundraising.

Dr. Michael Kolstad serves as vice president for university advancement and leads the development, alumni relations and public relations departments.

To more effectively serve Evangel University and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, a recent reorganization has resulted in Dan Shaffer being named director of development, Hector Cruz being named director for alumni engagement, and Christy Ayres being named alumni & development outreach coordinator.

Dan Shaffer has served in various roles at AGTS over the past 20 years, including as director of development and as director of finance and operations. He is a graduate of CBC and AGTS, and both of his children graduated from Evangel.

“In his expanded role, Dan will work with the development team to cultivate meaningful relationships with individual donors, alumni, foundations, corporations and friends of the university for the purpose of securing major gifts for Evangel and AGTS,” said Kolstad.

Hector Cruz has worked at Evangel since 2009, in the admissions, financial aid and advancement areas.

“In his new role, Hector will be responsible for the creation, planning and implementation of programs and projects that strategically engage Evangel, CBC and AGTS alumni in relationship strengthening programs,” said Kolstad. “Hector will also continue as the Capital Campaign Manager.”

Cruz graduated from Evangel with a bachelor’s degree in management and a master’s degree in organizational leadership. He has also earned Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification.

“Evangel helped me become the best possible version of myself,” said Cruz. “I got my job, degrees and my wife here. I tell people it’s my one-stop shop. Our goal is to continue being a resource for our students as they become alumni who impact the world, while passionately pursuing their calling.”

Christy Ayres joined the Evangel staff is 2011 and has also served in both the enrollment and advancement areas.

“With the new position, Christy will manage many of the details associated with alumni and donor events,” said Kolstad. “She will work to enhance communications and relationships with the University’s various publics including donors, churches, districts, alumni, students, faculty and staff.”

Joining in the transition will be Sarah Clark as development and alumni support specialist. She served at AGTS for more than 28 years within the offices of Records and Registration, Admissions, and Development & Alumni.
