Tell us about your career and what you do now.
I have taught for 25 years in all different types of classrooms across the state. I have taught elementary special education for six years, middle school special education for eight years and the last eleven years at the high school. The high schools have been the most impactful in helping students transition from the
school setting to jobs, careers, and college. I have implemented school stores, jobs at the school, transition nights for families, and helping students get into colleges. When I see former students, I love to hear what job, about their families, and the impact that I have had on their lives.
Tell us one achievement or accomplishment that stands out in your career!
My greatest achievement would be starting the transition fair with multiple different agencies for our parents and students. The parents and students have made some really great connections to help their kids after high school.
What is your favorite memory from your time as a student?
My favorite memory from college is making life long friends with my roommate and other education majors.
How did your school help you identify/develop your calling?
I have always loved to help students who struggled with school when I was in school. The education department gave me the resources to be able to reach those goals of being a special education teacher for my calling. The professors gave me the opportunity to get into the classrooms at all age levels to find the exact match. As a student, I always said that I never wanted to teach high school students but as it turns out it has been a more accomplished part of my career at the high school level.
How did your experience as a student prepare you for life after graduation?
It gave me multiple resources to use in my classrooms. It gave me the opportunity to explore all levels in the educational system. It provided me with a biblical background to take with me on a daily basis.
What advice would you give a current student preparing for the workforce?
My advice is to find a career that you love going to and completing each day.
What would you look for if you were in a position to hire new graduates from
Evangel?
I look for students who have a solid background in the career area with a biblical background.
