Mission-Centered Leadership
Dr. Michael Kolstad serves as President of Evangel University, bringing more than 35 years of service to the institution as a faculty member, academic leader, and senior executive. Throughout his career, he has helped shape the university’s growth through strategic leadership, academic innovation, institutional advancement, and a steadfast commitment to Evangel’s Christ-centered mission of developing servant leaders who influence the Church and society. Known for his collaborative leadership style, Dr. Kolstad has earned the trust of faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and trustees through a career marked by integrity, vision, and thoughtful stewardship.
Over the course of his tenure at Evangel, Dr. Kolstad has served in numerous leadership roles, including Interim Provost & VP for Academic Affairs, Vice President for Strategic Innovation, Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President, Vice President for University Advancement, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, and Chair of the Department of Music. He has led significant initiatives in strategic planning, academic restructuring, accreditation, governance, fundraising, enrollment growth, and institutional communications while helping secure transformational philanthropic investments and advancing the university’s long-term mission. Prior to his executive leadership, he served as a tenured professor of music, developing new academic programs, leading accreditation efforts, and mentoring generations of students.
Dr. Kolstad earned the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Bachelor of Music Education from Evangel University. He has received numerous professional honors, including the Alliance for Assemblies of God Higher Education Outstanding Administrator Award and the Springfield Business Journal’s Men of the Year recognition. A frequent speaker, author, and executive producer for select university publications and media projects, he remains deeply committed to Christian higher education, servant leadership, and preparing students to lead lives of faith, excellence, and service.
Dr. Kolstad and his wife, Paula, have been married for nearly four decades. They are the proud parents of two adult children, are grateful to have a wonderful son-in-law in their family, and cherish every opportunity to spend time with their two grandchildren. Outside the university, Dr. Kolstad enjoys fly fishing, astrophotography, and exploring God’s creation through the outdoors.
