SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel University education students have partnered with Ozark West Elementary to provide “Ozark West Literacy Night: Literacy Luau!” The event will take place at the elementary school tomorrow evening, April 11, at 5:30 p.m.

During the evening, Ozark West students and parents will rotate through the activities presented by a group of 16 Evangel students.

This is Evangel’s second year to work with Ozark West Elementary on a spring literacy event. Shonna Crawford, EU assistant professor of education (literacy), has allowed her communication arts class to work on preparations for the past six weeks, using class assignments to build toward the success of the event.

The class used the results of a survey completed by participants in last year’s event, and tailored the activities for this year accordingly. They also used data from the elementary school to determine how to meet their specific literacy goals.

“The students loved that their assignments in class were for an authentic purpose,” Crawford said. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with the staff at Ozark West Elementary once again. The activities will provide fun and meaningful ways for parents and students to engage in building literacy.”

The elementary school will provide pizza and refreshments for those in attendance, and the school’s PTA has provided supplies.
