SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel University Jazz Orchestra will perform in concert Tuesday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Barnett Fine Arts Recital Hall.

There is no charge for admission, and the public is invited to attend.

The jazz orchestra is directed by Joel Griffin, assistant professor of music and director of jazz studies at Evangel.

The jazz orchestra will perform works from Count Basie Orchestra, Woody Herman Big Band, Mel Lewis Thad Jones Jazz Orchestra and Tom Kubis.

“Jazz is America’s classical music,” Griffin said. “Teaching the students at Evangel is a great opportunity to work with very talented musicians. Teaching them about an art that is so important to this country and culture is an incredible opportunity.”

The Evangel University Jazz Orchestra performs contemporary compositions as well as jazz classics and sacred jazz arrangements. The ensemble offers students of all majors the opportunity to experience jazz performance and a variety of jazz styles.

Evangel University is a private, Christian university of arts, sciences and professions. With an enrollment of more than 2,000 students from all 50 states and abroad, Evangel offers more than 100 undergraduate academic programs and nine master’s programs.
