SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Jennifer Morrison, assistant professor of English/TESOL at Evangel University, recently made a presentation at the MIDTESOL conference in Ames, Iowa. The theme of the conference was “Cultivating Best Practices in ESL Education.”
MIDTESOL stands for Mid-America Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. It is a professional teaching organization that supports English language teachers in Missouri, Iowa and Kansas. ESL stands for English as a Second Language.
Morrison’s session was titled, “Cultivating Students’ Home Culture Connections in the K-12 Classroom.” The presentation focused on how teachers can adapt classroom lessons to include the home cultures and identities of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Morrison serves as general editor on MIDTESOL’s executive board and was responsible for introducing the organization’s first edition of a peer-reviewed conference proceedings document during the conference.

- Rebekah Ross, senior Spanish education major from High Ridge, Mo.
- Elizabeth Stoyeff, senior English major from Walnut Grove, Mo.
At the conference, Ross and Stoyeff attended a pre-conference workshop and plenary by Keith Folse, an expert in ESL writing. They also attended breakout sessions on topics such as teaching ESL grammar and vocabulary, assessment, cultural adaptations, curriculum planning and other ESL-related topics.
