Evangel University professor reviews feature writing textbook

Published on Feb 6, 2013 by Evangel University News

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Nancy Pace-Miller, assistant professor of communication at Evangel University, recently served as a professor reviewer for a brand new college textbook, Magazine Writing, by Christopher Benson and Charles Whitaker.

Pace-Miller examined and critiqued eight chapters. The text is due for release in October 2013, published by Routledge, a division of Taylor and Francis Group.

“I have taught Feature Writing every spring since 2000, and I have examined and used many different books over the years,” Pace-Miller said. “The editorial and sales team contacted me if I would be interested in reviewing a new feature writing book coming out.”

“It was a challenge to think through the chapters and to think like a student. I tried to see the material the way a student would see it, reading this information for the first time. I had to ask myself if the content would hold students’attention and move them into the rest of book. I then had to think like a professor using the text as his or her primary textbook. Would it help solidify the objectives for those topics or not?”

Pace-Miller has taught communication courses at Evangel since 1989 and was hired as a full-time faculty member in 1999. In addition to serving as faculty adviser for Excalibur, the university’s student-produced yearbook, she coordinates internships for communication students, supervises and teaches in the communication department’s degree completion program for adult learners, serves as an academic adviser and teaches upper-division summer courses.

“Getting to work on this was such an honor.  I can’t wait for it to be released,” Pace-Miller said.
