Published on Aug 3, 2012 by Paul K. Logsdon

SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI — Evangel University is hosting more than 300 educators from Springfield and the surrounding school districts for the 9th annual Springfield Literacy Institute “Reach for the Stars.” The event is sponsored by the Springfield Public Schools and will run August 1-2.

The conference is designed for K-12 classroom teachers, reading and instructional specialists, literacy coaches, administrators and curriculum directors.

“Springfield Public Schools and Evangel University have partnered in providing the literacy conference for several years,” said Dr. Becky Huechteman education professor at Evangel.

“It is exciting to collaborate in bringing outstanding experts in the field of literacy to share strategies with our area teachers, so that literacy instruction can be strengthened!”

Participants have the opportunity to learn from three nationally acclaimed authors — Jeff Anderson, Jim Burke and Frank Serafini — and attend approximately 20 breakout sessions. Many area educators are also presenting during the sessions.

Topics are designed to explore current research and literacy methodologies, with the goal of improving literacy instruction and learning in general.

Denise Kelly, communication arts curriculum facilitator for Springfield Public Schools planned the event. Becky Huechteman coordinated the facilities planning at Evangel.

One hour of graduate credit from Evangel University is offered for teachers attending the event.

Evangel University is a private, Christian university of arts, sciences and professions. With enrollment of 2,100 students coming from all 50 states and abroad, Evangel offers more than 100 undergraduate programs and 9 master’s degree programs.
