3 things to do when choosing a major

Going to college can be worrying for several reasons. Living on your own can be nerve-wracking. Plus, classes are tougher than in high school and you might have to do your own laundry for the first time!

Yet, one of the most important decisions during college is choosing your major. This will determine your career and life after college. Here are some pieces of advice if you’re having a difficult time deciding what your major should be.

Write out your interests

One of the easiest ways to weed-out some choices is to list things you enjoy doing. You are compiling a list of things that make you happy, meaning that you’ll enjoy learning more about them.

Say your list includes playing baseball, working out and working with children. On first glance, this seems like an odd assortment of interests. But, think of a career in elementary physical education or personal training. Then, a degree in exercise science will make sure you’re well-prepped after graduation.

Decide your own goals

Make sure that you make the decision. Your major should be your choice, even though it’s easy to get lost in the opinions of others.

When writing out your interests, write out goals you want to complete by graduation.

Start with the stereotypical interview question: where do you want to be in 5 years? Then, think beyond that.

Writing out your goals will define what you need to do now and then. Use this to help decide the major that will best help you achieve these goals.

Relax, think, pray

Choosing a major can be stressful. If you are unsure about what you want to study, it’s easy to feel pressure to make a snap-decision.

Remember to relax, take a deep breath and think through your decision. Stop and pray over your decision. When you feel God placing a calling on your life, you will know what direction to take.

Follow the calling God has given you, and choosing the major right for you will be simple. Don’t get caught up in the stress of choosing your major, it will come to you soon. Then, you’ll be ready to learn and grow during your time at EU!
