The Leadership the Moment Requires

By Dr. Mike Rakes

There are moments in history when leadership requires more than strategy.

It requires discernment.

The world our graduates are stepping into today is fast moving, complex, and often uncertain. Technology is reshaping entire industries. Cultural conversations are shifting rapidly. Institutions that once seemed stable are being reexamined in real time.

In times like these, competence alone is not enough.

What the moment requires are leaders whose lives are anchored in something deeper than trends or headlines. Leaders who carry both intellectual seriousness and spiritual clarity. Leaders who know how to listen carefully to the world around them while remaining attentive to the quiet prompting of the Holy Spirit.

That kind of leadership has always been part of Evangel University’s calling.

From its earliest days, Evangel was built on the conviction that faith and learning belong together. A student’s professional preparation should never be detached from spiritual formation. Knowledge should sharpen the mind, but it should also deepen wisdom and strengthen conviction.

When that happens, graduates do more than build successful careers. They become stabilizing influences in the places where God positions them.

Across the years, I have met Evangel alumni serving in ministry around the world. I have also seen many of them step into positions of responsibility in their work and leadership, allowing their faith to inform the decisions entrusted to them

Across each of these interactions, the same theme emerges. Evangel graduates bring real competence to the work they are given, but their influence is shaped just as much by the character and convictions they carry with them. Their work reflects a commitment to excellence that grows out of a deeper foundation.

That is the kind of influence Evangel continues to cultivate in the students walking our campus today. They are studying diligently, exploring their calling, and preparing to enter professions that will carry them into every sector of society.

And in many ways, they are walking a path made clearer by you.

Your lives and leadership continue to demonstrate what it looks like when faith informs both vocation and responsibility. For that, Evangel remains deeply grateful.

The challenges of this moment are real. But so is the opportunity.

The world does not simply need more voices. It needs wise leaders whose lives reflect both conviction and compassion.

That is the kind of leadership Evangel has always sought to cultivate.

And by God’s grace, it’s the kind of leadership Evangel alumni are bringing to the world every day.
