Tell us about your career and what you do now.
I have spent the majority of my career in retail and manufacturing as a financial leader. My first job after graduating was with Price Waterhouse in Dallas,Texas where I worked on the audit team. This turned out to be a great first job as I studied for and passed the CPA examination, received great training and was exposed to many industries as well as working with some incredible people.
After four years at Price Waterhouse, I decided to make a move when I was offered the opportunity to join BizMart Office Products, a private-equity start-up national retailer, serving as Controller and Vice-President of Finance for five years. During this period, we expanded from 1 store to over 175 stores with annual revenues of approaching $1 billion. We went public after 18 months, and eventually sold the business to OfficeMax. It was a lot of work, but we had a great young team, and we all learned so much.
When I moved to the DFW area in 1984 I started attending Rockwood Park Assembly of God church in Fort Worth. I met Sharon Testa who was also an Evangel alumnus, and we became great friends. Sharon joined the finance team at BizMart, and we worked together for four years. During this time we started dating and then in 1993 after the company sale we were married. It is so much fun that we had this shared experience working with a great team and for a great company.
Next, for three years I served as CFO for Lil’Things, another start-up national retailer. Following this, I worked as CFO for several other retail companies. I spent 18 years as CFO of Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company, a global apparel brand with brand revenues over $1.5 billion. My finance organization spanned offices in the US, Canada, Mexico, Honduras, England, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France, Japan and China. In 2017, I managed the sale process of the Company to VF Corporation for $820M. After the sale I remained as brand CFO until 2023. Currently, I offer consulting services as a fractional CFO and provide financial consulting for several churches.
I had the privilege of serving on the Evangel University Alumni board for several years and then on the Board of Trustees for over 15 years with the last three years as the Board Chair.
Since moving to Texas, I have served in various capacities at Mission City Church (previously Rockwood Park and Fossil Creek Church) in Fort Worth, including Board Member, worship team member, Community Meals feeding outreach team member and various other ministries.
Tell us one achievement or accomplishment that stands out in your career!
My experience at BizMart was remarkable. Starting from scratch without employees, systems, or offices, I joined as the first store was opening. We built a finance team and worked intensely, yet it was incredibly rewarding. We took the company public within 18 months and completed a secondary offering the following year, continuing rapid expansion. The challenges forged strong bonds and lasting friendships, and I’m proud to have been part of this team.
What is your favorite memory from your time as a student?
There were so many great memories, it is hard to pick just one. As crazy as it sounds, living in the dorm was so much fun and there were some great memories of hanging out with friends until all hours of the night and eating a lot of pizza. Friendships were so important to my time at Evangel.
How did your school help you identify/develop your calling?
When I began my freshman year, I made the decision to pursue a career in Public Accounting. My older brother, Rod, was already at Evangel and was pursuing an accounting degree. The accounting professors at Evangel University consistently encouraged me to strive for excellence and work diligently to achieve my goals. To finance my tuition, I worked nearly full-time in a retail position. Although this job was not directly related to accounting, it provided valuable lessons and allowed me to apply what I was learning in my coursework. Additionally, President Spence played a significant role in emphasizing the importance of integrating faith and learning, which has profoundly influenced both my career and personal life.
How did your experience as a student prepare you for life after graduation?
Evangel provided a solid foundation for entering post-college life. My connection with Evangel began early, as my parents met there and my father was in the second graduating class. My mother worked at Evangel for many years, and I spent considerable time on campus with her and my siblings (all of whom attended and/or graduated from Evangel). One summer, at the age of 16, I worked for the maintenance department and contributed to building Evangel’s first computer lab among other projects.
With Sharon and I both graduating from Evangel we had a similar backdrop from which to start our own family. We have 2 children, Nicole and James. Nicole graduated from The University of Arkansas and James graduated from Evangel. Our education on the integration of faith and learning influenced how we raised our children. We are so proud of who they are today. These experiences have played a role in shaping my career path.
What advice would you give a current student preparing for the workforce?
As you begin your professional journey, I encourage you to remain authentic and uphold a strong ethical framework. Choose a career path that aligns with your passions and diligently strive to learn from your colleagues and peers. Additionally, seek out a church where you can have community and actively participate and contribute. Engaging in community service will offer valuable balance for your professional life.
What would you look for if you were in a position to hire new graduates from Evangel?
In evaluating a new hire, I prioritize individuals with high integrity and a strong work ethic. Candidates who demonstrate positivity, a willingness to learn, effective teamwork capabilities, and a commitment to hard work will consistently be at an advantage over others.
