The Evangel University Fine Art & Design Gallery will be displaying the works of Uncommon Threads, a group of fiber artists from the surrounding Springfield area, through the month of February.
An opening night reception will be held to honor the group Friday, Feb. 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
The gallery is located in the Lawrence & Alletha Barnett Fine Arts Center, just south of the Spence Chapel, facing Glenstone Ave. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
According to artist Julie Rush, art from several traditional quilters will be displayed, along with some new trends. “Pictorial fabric art is an innovative change from traditional quilting. It runs the gamut of combining fabric and paints to constructing three-dimensional fabric sculptures,” she said.
The exhibit will display 33 landscape, figurative and abstract pieces from 11 artists, including Lettie Blackburn, Dianna Callahan, Donna Olson, Roberta Ranney, Sally Robinson, Julie Rush, Emmie Seaman, Lucy Silliman, Diane Steffen, Vivian Terbeek and Merrilee Tieche.

Uncommon Threads is a network of art quilters working in mediums including fabric dyes and paints, weaving, photography and three dimensional fiber art. The artists of Uncommon Threads have the freedom to explore various methods of constructing and embellishing images with nontraditional materials and fabrics.
The individual artists’ works are informed by a variety of inspirations, ranging from whimsicality to the reflection of mankind’s nature. Each fiber artist maintains an individual style of work and subject matter.
Individual members have exhibited locally and nationally at varied galleries and art shows.

Art at Evangel
The art program at Evangel University is housed in the Barnett Fine Arts Center and offers majors in art and art education.
The Bachelor of Arts degree program is for students who desire a well-rounded approach to artistic disciplines. It combines a strong presence of art history and appreciation courses with practical expertise in various studio areas.
The Art Education degree is for the creative art student seeking certification to teach art in elementary, junior high or high school grades. Evangel University’s program meets the Missouri state requirements for certification in Art Education, grades K-12. The degree program requires course work in both Art and Education, as well as a minor in a related field.
