Second Lieutenant Jasmin R. Luck, USAF Chaplain Candidate, was recently presented with the Air Force Achievement Medal in a ceremony held at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary of Evangel University.
Luck was recognized for diligent service during her supervised internship with the USAF, this past summer in Guam. The award ceremony was held August 29, 2018.
“This is a high honor,” said Chaplain Stormy Davis, Veteran’s Center coordinator at Evangel. “This is the first time a Chaplain Candidate at AGTS has been honored in this way.”
The Air Force Achievement Medal is awarded to Air Force personnel for outstanding achievement or meritorious service rendered specifically on behalf of the Air Force. It may also be awarded for acts of courage lesser than for award of the Air Force Commendation Medal (AFCM).
Chaplain Candidate Luck is in the process of completing her Master of Divinity degree at AGTS, and serves as the president of the Student Leadership Council there.
While enrolled at the seminary, she also serves as a staff pastor at Evangel Temple Christian Center in Springfield.
Distinguished service
Lieutenant Luck’s summer of service was well received at the 36th Wing, Anderson Air Force Base, Guam.
“During this period, the leadership of Lieutenant Luck resulted in significant contributions to the effectiveness of the wing’s chapel program and enhanced the spiritual readiness of 8,500 Airmen and families,” stated the report for her Air Force Achievement Medal.
“Guam was my first supervised internship, and it was an amazing learning experience,” Luck replied. “For our annual tours, we shadow chaplains, assist with worship services, and become immersed in military culture. While in Guam, I preached in both the Contemporary and Gospel services. Each worship style gave me a better idea of the diversity that is represented in the Chaplain Corps.”
According to the report, “Her matchless ability to reach Airmen and to partner with other agencies” was demonstrated through the planning and execution of a series of activities, including a Single Airmen’s Retreat and a Summer Bash that reached more than 327 Airmen and dependents.
“One experience I found humbling was providing an invocation for a memorial ceremony during Guam’s Liberation Day Parade,” she added.
Her supervisors reported it this way — “Lieutenant Luck enthusiastically accomplished the training priorities of the Chaplain Candidate Program when she flawlessly delivered an invocation at a high visibility ceremony in memory of the B-52 ‘Raider 21’ aircrew, honoring the fallen and their families and demonstrating her readiness to enter the chaplain corps.”
In addition to the Air Force Achievement Medal, Luck has been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Air Force Training Ribbon.
AGTS impact
“I chose AGTS because I wanted a seminary that emphasized Holy Spirit empowerment in ministry,” said Luck, who is licensed by the Assemblies of God and is a member of the Southern Missouri District Council.
“AGTS is known for having one of the top chaplaincy programs,” she continued. “When chaplain candidates leave AGTS, we have the necessary tools to be successful in the military, or wherever we feel God is calling us to serve. We receive support from faculty, staff, and pastors of local churches, and this support system makes a huge difference in our preparation for chaplaincy.”
