SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — EU Films will be presenting the science-fiction drama “While the World Slept” on December 12, 2019, at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

The premiere of the student-produced film will be located in the recital hall of the Barnett Fine Arts Center on Evangel University’s campus. Barnett is located just south of the Spence Chapel, facing Glenstone Ave.

The cost of admission for adults is $2, students $1, and Evangel students with an ID get in free.

“While the World Slept” tells the story of Charlie, a young bookstore employee who, after an accident, begins to notice that everyone else is acting strange. Not knowing what made them this way, Charlie encounters a group of strangers who believe an event happened in secret that put the world into an emotionless, autonomous state. The group takes in Charlie while they attempt to reverse it, but many dangers present themselves the deeper they go.

Student experience

“We spent a lot of time carefully crafting the story into what it is now and we’re proud of the finished product,” said Emily Groves, the film’s producer and screenwriter.

Directing the movie is senior Josie Hewlett. Hewlett has worked on several EU Films productions in other positions.

“I think the level of commitment for this film has been beneficial. From the beginning, all of us have said that we’ll do whatever it takes to make a great film,” said Hewlett about crafting “While the World Slept.”

Additional staff includes assistant director Jacob Smith; chief editor Tristin Ray; director of photography Jayce McQueen; audio supervisor Ezekiel Ewing; assistant editor Bayleigh Olson; and assistant audio supervisor Kylie Butler.

The film features actors from the Springfield-Branson area, with Evangel freshman Ethan Mannecke as Charlie. Others in the main cast are Zach Greer, Emma Reinagel, Mickey Stone, and Jerry-Mac Johnston.

“While the World Slept” began pre-production in the spring of 2019, with filming beginning in September. Students involved will have filmed scenes every weekend since production began.

“We think everyone will like this film,” said Groves. “Our team has worked for months to put together a production the student body will enjoy.”
