SPRINGFIELD, Missouri — More than 165 Evangel University students participated in community service projects throughout the Ozarks on Oct. 23–26 in recognition of National Make a Difference Day. Though traditionally recognized on the fourth Saturday in October, volunteer options were extended for four days to maximize student participation.

Benefiting organizations included Victory Mission, the Springfield Dream Center, Convoy of Hope, Harmony House, Crosslines, Robberson Neighborhood Association, Maranatha Village, Freedom City Church, and Dogwood Ranch.

Combined, 210 unique requests were completed with a total investment of 500.5 hours of service.

Volunteer activities included cleaning, painting, organizing donations, serving meals, preparing kits and supplies for upcoming outreach events, and ministry and prayer services.

“Serving our community with compassion is a central part of what we are called to do at Evangel,” said Chad Nelson, EU compassion coordinator. “Evangel students represented Jesus in their attitudes and actions this past week and were able to be a blessing to these local organizations and the people they assist.”

“We had the best crew. The students outdid themselves with such incredible hearts, attitudes, and work ethic,” said Dana Lopez, director of Dogwood Ranch. “Any time a new task or last-minute need came up, we just said, ‘Evangel can handle it!’ And they did!”

Make a Difference Day is recognized as one of the largest collective days of community service in the country, observed on the fourth Saturday in October.
