SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Evangel University chapter of Sigma Tau Delta is celebrating their 40thanniversary during the 2012-2013 school year.

Sigma Tau Delta is an international English honor society. Evangel’s chapter was started in the fall of 1972 as a way to recognize outstanding students in the English department. Around 300 students from Evangel are currently part of the honor society.

Sandy Vekasy, associate professor of English, is in her 27th year as the faculty advisor. Vekasy will be retiring in May, and Jennifer Morrison, assistant professor of English, will begin as advisor for the 2013-2014 school year.

“The chapter of Sigma Tau Delta at Evangel validates the university and the achievement of its majors on an international level and to the larger Evangel University community,” Vekasy said. “It instantly informs future employers of the high level of proficiency of our students.”

To join Sigma Tau Delta, students must have completed three semesters of college and a minimum of two college English courses or literature courses beyond the usual freshman requirements. Students must also have a grade point average higher than 3.0.
