Evangel University New Testament professor published as contributing author in book

Published on Jun 12, 2013 by Valorie Coleman

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Dr. Dwight Sheets, associate professor of New Testament at Evangel University, has been featured as one of the authors in the book Jesus is Lord, Caesar is Not, published by IVP Academic in March 2013.

The book brings together a group of biblical scholars to investigate the question of how the New Testament addresses the Roman rule in the first century.

In the chapter titled, “Something Old, Something New: Revelation and Empire,” Sheets writes on the Book of Revelation. He evaluates the biblical character of John’s approach towards Rome and his concerns with Christians who were conforming to its culture.

“My part was to critique the validity of the idea that John’s greatest concern was the imperialism of Rome,” Sheets said.

Paul Trebilco, professor of New Testament studies at the University of Otago, New Zealand, reviewed the book. “These insightful essays advance our thinking on this very important topic and further our understanding of the Gospel and of the relationship between God’s kingdom and the powers of this world,” he said.

Sheets has previously been featured for his work in “Who Do My Opponents Say That I am? An Investigation of the Accusations against the Historical Jesus,” published in the Library of New Testament Studies, 2008 edition.
