Evangel University to host 14th annual Heritage of Hymns concert

Published on Oct 7, 2022 by Erin Hedlun

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Evangel University will again host the Heritage of Hymns Concert, presented by the Messiah Project, on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in Spence Chapel.

The public is invited to attend, and admission to the event is free.

The concert will feature a choir, orchestra, and dancers from Ballet Excelsior of Houston, Texas, as well as the Nixa Junior High Varsity Singers.

This year’s concert theme is “This Is My Father’s World,” and the program will include choral and orchestral versions of notable hymns, a ballet performance of “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, and the third movement of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 6.”

The Messiah Project is a Christian fine arts organization headquartered in Springfield, Missouri whose visual, dramatic, and musical productions celebrate the Jewish and Christian heritage at the core of artistic culture. The organization was founded in 1992, and the Heritage of Hymns concert series began in 2008.

The concert brings together choir members from 26 churches across the local community. Heritage of Hymns provides an opportunity for Christians from different congregations to come together to celebrate faith through music.

Dr. Larry Dissmore, Evangel’s director of orchestra activities, is partnering with Nathan Cornelius, accomplished conductor and educator, and Tim Falch, Heritage of Hymns assistant choral director and EU alum, to bring this concert to Evangel. EU Assistant Registrar for Online & Graduate Student Services Kathy Harrison will lead the bell choir. EU Worship Leadership Program Director Dr. Jason Salazar provided orchestral arrangements.
