Evangel University to participate in community-wide Easter Sunday sunrise celebration

Published on Apr 4, 2012 by Jennifer Hall

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Hundreds of members of the Springfield community will come together this Sunday, April 8, for the seventh annual Greater Springfield Sunrise Celebration at Hammons Field.

Gates will open at 6 a.m., and the service begins at 6:30 a.m. The service is interdenominational and open to all.

Evangel professor emeritus of music John Shows will lead The Triumphant Trumpeters, a group of 15 musicians who will open the event with an Easter fanfare, “Christ Arose.”

Among the trumpeters will be Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Glenn Bernet, staff member Joe Zeh, alumni Jonathan Plaster, Darren Eddington and Brandon Snavely as well as current EU seniors Dody Harmon and Nina Falch.

Mark Lawley, 1989 Evangel graduate and director of music education at Drury University, will lead the congregational singing. Lawley also will direct the Boys Choir of Springfield.

Evangel alumni Glenroy and Shirley Shedd serve on the Sunrise Celebration committee, an interdenominational committee of 18 members. Shirley is the archivist at Evangel University.

The Springfield Cardinals organization makes Hammons Field available at no cost to the Sunrise Celebration.  Free parking will be available in the ballpark lots.

The service will last only one hour so that attendees can attend the early services at their own churches. In case of rain, the service will be held indoors at the Springfield Cardinals training facility at Hammons Field.

The service schedule will include the following:

  • Opening Prayer: Ron Morein, pastor of Oak Grove Assembly of God Church
  • Scripture Reading: Sevo Lawlai from Missouri State University Campus Ministries
  • Personal Testimony: Mike Shildt, new manager of the Springfield Cardinals
  • Speaker: Major Norman Grainger of the Salvation Army
  • Benediction: Mark Struckoff of the Springfield Area Council of Churches
