Evangel welcomes Roger Moore as Director of Public Safety

Published on Feb 5, 2014 by Paul K. Logsdon

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Evangel University has welcomed only its second full-time director of public safety in the school’s 59-year history.

Roger Moore began his service with Evangel on Monday, Feb. 3, and a come-and-go-reception was held for the campus and community to meet him on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Evangel’s Department of Public Safety is located in Riggs Administration Building, on the front of the campus by the flagpole.

Moore took early retirement on Jan. 31, following 20 years with the Springfield Police Department.

His final assignment there was as the Academy Director and the Training Section Commander responsible for operations at the new Springfield Police & Fire Regional Training Center.

Over the years, he served in many assignments, including five years as the MSU Police Substation Supervisor.

“We are pleased to welcome Roger to the Evangel University family,” said Sheri Phillips, vice president for student development and his immediate supervisor. “His philosophy of service and his background make him an excellent fit for our campus.”

Moore replaces Gene Thomlinson, who started as Evangel’s first full-time campus security office in 1969 and, over the past 44 years, built a professional department with 14 full-time and three part-time employees. Thomlinson retired at the end of 2013.

“This is a great opportunity, because I really enjoy the campus environment,” said Moore. “I love the atmosphere and energy that the students bring.

“I believe we are in the service business,” he added. “The students are our customers, and we are here for them.”

Moore has a M.S. degree in Criminal Justice from Lincoln University and a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from Drury University. He is nearly finished with a second M.S. degree from Webster University in Business & Organizational Security Management.
