More than 160 Evangel participants involved in service trips this spring & summer

Published on Mar 13, 2024 by Erin Hedlun

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – More than 160 Evangel University students, faculty, and staff have or will participate in service trips to a variety of locations throughout the 2024 spring and summer semesters. Of the 19 experiences sponsored by Evangel’s Global Cultures & Compassion program, four are domestic and 15 are international. Service and learning trips are a core component to the Evangel academic experience.

Four of the international experiences are taking place this week over Evangel’s spring break.

Spain – Barcelona

A group of 10 students are participating in a six-team women’s flag football tournament through the Catalonia Federation of American Football (FCFA).  Following the tournament, EU students will practice with the teams to continue the relationships built in the competition. EU students will also volunteer in different areas at the International Church of Barcelona. The trip is led by Scott Metcalf, EU’s assistant director of athletics.

Spain – Malaga

A group of nine Evangel students are partnering with Malaga International Church to prepare a new church building for the English-speaking community. The team will also connect with the local community and minister at a Sunday service. The trip is led by Dr. Brandon Schmidly, professor of philosophy at Evangel.

Cyprus

Four Evangel students are working and training alongside refugees to receive certification with the Specialty Coffee Association. As part of the experience, students raised the funds needed to cover the cost of the refugees’ training. This certification will allow the refugees to secure future employment in the coffee industry where their families eventually settle. The trip is led by Jason Sprinkel, assistant director of Evangel’s Burnett Center for Biblical Preaching.

Heartsong performs at a church this week in Rome, Italy.

Italy – Rome

Seventeen members of Heartsong, EU’s traveling worship team, are performing in 10 services during an eight-day period in Rome and outlying areas. As part of the experience, students will also serve in an outreach event and provide educational assistance in worship workshops and coaching sessions. The team is led by Dr. Bonnie Jenkins, chair of Evangel’s assessment team and director of Heartsong.

Additional trips include an LA Films experience, Washington D.C. studies, Alaska, Cambodia, Europe, Costa Rica, and more.
