SPRINGFIELD, MO — Evangel University is participating in National Campus Safety Awareness Month, during September 2015.

The non-profit Clery Center for Security On Campus is partnering with Evangel and other organizations and institutions for the “Know More, Do More” campaign.

The campaign focuses campus communities on increasing awareness and engagement around issues such as sexual assault, dating violence, hazing and stalking. It empowers students as bystanders to make changes in their campus environment and encourages victims to seek the support they deserve.

According to Clery Center documents, “Know More” means being armed with the resources and knowledge to help a student, a friend or a colleague. “Do More” means putting your knowledge to action through poster campaigns, events and more.

“The first few weeks of college are critical to starting a dialog about campus safety,” said Roger Moore, Evangel’s director of public safety. “Our department’s number one priority is to protect our most valuable asset, our people.”

Training and creating awareness

According to Moore, Evangel University is committed to creating a safer and more supportive campus for all campus community members.

As a part of the National Campus Safety Awareness Month, EU will sponsor the following activities:

  • Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention (SHARP) training for female students, faculty and staff on Saturday, Sept. 19, from noon to 4 p.m., in Crusader Hall room 115 (Student Union)
  • Instructional posts on Evangel’s Department of Public Safety Facebook page about a variety of topics including bystander intervention, stalking awareness, emergency preparedness and fire safety
  • Fire drills in residence halls
  • Posting newly updated Emergency Crisis Plan flip charts in each classroom

Prior to joining Evangel in early 2014, Moore served 20 years with the Springfield Police Department. His last assignment was as the Academy Director and the Training Section Commander responsible for operations at the Springfield Police & Fire Regional Training Center.

Institutions participating in the National Campus Safety Awareness Month campaign receive resources that help them implement programs on their campuses.
