Actors, simulated injuries bring realism to training from OTC
Accidents and injuries are not uncommon on a college campus, especially among student athletes. The Allied Health Simulation Center from Ozarks Technical Community College will hold its first ever sports medicine emergency training session this Thursday, Aug. 3, 1-4 p.m., on the campus of Evangel University.
“The staff from OTC have worked with area police, fire and SWAT teams for on-site training, but this will be their first simulation lab geared toward college athletics,” said Marisa Foltz, head athletic trainer at Evangel.
The simulations will be for Evangel’s sports medicine and athletic training staff, plus students majoring in athletic training.
“This is preparation for the new school year, which starts for our athletes next Monday,” said Foltz. The Evangel football, soccer and volleyball teams start their practice sessions on Monday morning, Aug. 7.
The staff of OTC’s Allied Health Simulation Center have worked with Evangel to develop a series of sports-related medical emergency scenarios.
“Sport-related injury and illness scenarios have been created specifically for the athletic trainers and athletic training students to practice the implementation of emergency procedures and protocols,” said Sarah Walters, director of Evangel’s Athletic Training Program.
“We will utilize actors and simulators to provide valuable feedback to our athletic trainers and athletic training students to improve the care they are able to provide to Evangel’s student-athletes,” she said.
LOCATION
The Center’s mobile unit and staff will be on Evangel’s campus Thursday afternoon, Aug. 3, primarily on Coryell Field, the new AstroTurf surface on the west side of campus. They will start at 1 p.m., and later in the day, there will be training on the basketball court in the Ashcroft Center.
