Published on Jul 30, 2026 by Erin Hedlun

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel University’s board of trustees announced today that President Mike Rakes believes his season of leadership at the university has come to a close. The board has accepted his resignation with gratitude.

For five years, President Rakes has served Evangel University with dedication and care. Under his leadership, Evangel has increased momentum in enrollment, facility expansion, student experience and a renewed spiritual vitality.

Serving as president of Evangel University has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” President Rakes said. “As Darla and I begin the next chapter of our lives, we do so with hearts overflowing with gratitude. We leave blessed because of the friendships we have formed and the privilege of walking this journey with you.”

Dr. Michael Kolstad, Evangel University Interim President

In the coming months, the board will begin a search process for the university’s next president. The board is grateful to Dr. Michael Kolstad for his willingness to serve as interim president. His 35-year commitment to Evangel University’s mission, extensive leadership experience, and steady guidance will provide continuity during this transition.

Evangel University’s strength has always been found in its collective community: its faithful faculty and staff, its remarkable students, its loyal alumni, its church partners and the countless people who believe in its mission to educate and equip students to become Spirit-empowered servants of God who impact the church and society globally. That community is the foundation that carries Evangel University through every season and every leader.

Evangel University’s core mission, biblical foundation and academic commitment remain unchanged. Campus events, student financial aid, academic programs and athletic operations will continue without interruption.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank Dr. Mike Rakes for his service and dedication to Evangel University. We are grateful for his contributions to our students and the Evangel community,” said Josh Bartlotti, chair of Evangel University’s board of trustees. “As we move forward, the board remains committed to Evangel’s Christ-centered mission and is confident in the University’s future. We ask our community to join us in praying for Dr. Rakes and his family, as well as for Evangel during this time of transition.”
