Evangel University is pleased to announce President Robert H. Spence’s appointment as Chancellor upon his retirement at the end of the school year, April 30, 2014.
Reporting to and working closely with Evangel’s new president, Dr. Carol Taylor, Dr. Spence’s primary responsibility will be in donor relations, fund development, and ambassador for Evangel, promoting the mission, vision and identity of the University.
The University Board of Trustees approved the part-time appointment of Dr. Spence in this new role at their Board meeting on March 19, according to Dr. Taylor, president-elect/CEO of Evangel.
“Dr. Spence has served with distinction and is deeply respected both as an educator and as a community leader,” said Taylor. “This new position honors his life of exemplary University leadership and service.”
Dr. Spence is one of the longest serving college presidents in the U.S. He will complete 40 years of service as the president of Evangel when he retires on April 30.
Dr. George Wood, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Fellowship, serves as chair of the Evangel University Board of Trustees.
“Dr. Spence has served with distinction for the past 40 years as president of Evangel University, leading the institution to where it is today — a consolidated university of Evangel, Central Bible College, and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary,” noted Dr. Wood.
“He is deeply committed to the school, the community, and the Assemblies of God Fellowship. The Board is grateful that he will continue to support the University and its new president in his part-time role as Chancellor,” said Dr. Wood.
Dr. Carol Taylor was named president-elect/ceo in July of 2013 and becomes president on May 1, 2014. She will be the fourth president of Evangel since it was founded in 1955 and the first that is a graduate of the institution.
Taylor earned a B.S. in elementary education from Evangel, an M.A. in cross-cultural communication from AGTS, and a Ph.D. in multilingual/multicultural education from Florida State University. She most recently served as president of Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA.
