Dual Enrollment: Athena's Story

Athena DeMera, sophomore at Evangel University, chose to register for Evangel’s Dual Enrollment courses as a high school student. While looking for dual enrollment courses, Athena said, “I originally took dual enrollment classes from OTC, but decided I wanted a Christian approach to school. My dad and I looked for dual enrollment offered by Christian schools, and Evangel kept coming up. The courses at Evangel were inexpensive and sounded like fun!”

Athena registered for dual enrollment courses and entered Evangel as a Sophomore with 30 college credits and a 4.0 GPA. Athena emphasized the impact these courses had on her choice to come to Evangel, rather than other Christian universities after high school. Her dual enrollment courses allowed her to connect with other Evangel students and faculty as well as the women’s soccer coach and music department professors.

Evangel’s dual enrollment courses also prepared Athena for success as she transitioned to college. “Dual enrollment helped prepare me for entrance into college because I was already accustomed to the workload and how things were done. I knew what to expect for assignments, and how to handle the programs. Dual enrollment also allowed me to connect with the professors before I ever came to in-person classes! The classes I took from Evangel intrigued me and made me want to take more of them,” she said.

Athena is currently pursuing a degree in Music Education, and because of her dual enrollment courses, she is able to complete a 4-and-a-half-year program in only 4 years while also playing for Evangel’s women’s soccer team. Athena is also heavily involved on campus through being a member of orchestra and sinfonia.

“Dual enrollment was a way for me to get my foot in the door at this amazing school. It allowed me to get connected with students and faculty and see the real reason why Evangel was the place for me. Thanks to Evangel’s dual enrollment, I am a year ahead, and can graduate in much less time.”
