Published on Jul 10, 2018 by Mallory Johnson

Evangel University business professor Eveline Lewis has been awarded her Doctor of Business Administration degree from Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. She successfully defended her work May 23, 2018.

Her dissertation was a study of globalization and hiring practices in different cultures, with a focus on her native country of Indonesia.

Lewis has lived and worked cross-culturally in five countries — China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan and USA. She speaks English, Indonesian and Mandarin Chinese.

She began teaching at Evangel in 2012, focusing on the University’s then-new Nonprofit Business & Social Enterprise major. Her courses include entrepreneurship, management, marketing and personal finance.

Lewis was named chair of the Evangel University Department of Business in January 2018.

Her love for teaching, ministry and business brought her to Evangel, but her love for travel and business management led her to her research.

The study

The dissertation, titled “Globalization and Overt Gender or Age Requirements in Job Advertisements in Indonesia, focused on gender and age requirements listed in job advertisements.

“I have lived and worked in both for-profit and nonprofit businesses in three states and five countries,” said Lewis. “I worked in some multinational companies as well as in local companies. I also worked in church-related institutions and secular institutions.

“I have observed that different countries have different standards with their hiring practices,” she continued.

“Some practices that would be illegal in one country are not illegal in another. I also know that US-based Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has influenced the globalized world. I was interested in how companies in different cultures behaved accordingly,” she said.
