Bingham Elementary students to visit Evangel University

Published on Apr 23, 2012 by Jennifer Hall

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Approximately 50 Bingham Elementary fifth graders will visit the Evangel University campus on Thursday, April 26. The group will take a tour of campus and eat lunch in the cafeteria.

Upon their arrival, the students will meet in the Heritage Room in Riggs Hall. They will be split into four groups, which will each be led on a campus tour by Evangel student hosts and selected students from the education department.

Evangel partners annually with Bingham through the Teacher Education Alliance, whose goal is to increase student success within Title 1 schools in the Springfield Public School District. Collaborators within the Alliance include Evangel University, Baptist Bible College, Drury University, Missouri State University and Springfield Public Schools.

“The idea initially came about in conversations with Bingham’s principal, Dr. Adam Meador,” said Debra Yonke, associate professor of education at Evangel. “We were looking for something to recognize the fifth graders for their hard work on their year-end tests, and also to inspire them to begin dreaming about attending college.”

Meador, a 2007 Evangel graduate, was recently honored as the 2012 Exemplary New Principal by the Springfield district of the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals. He was honored during a reception at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Mo., in March.
