Evangel University senior receives Dr. Joe McAdoo Memorial Scholarship

July 11, 2013 | Valorie Coleman

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. –– The Southwest Missouri chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (SWMO PRSA) has selected Irene Kanthan to receive the Dr. Joe McAdoo Memorial Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Students from six area colleges were eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarship, which also allows the recipient to attend monthly SWMO PRSA meetings free of charge. Kanthan will use the scholarship for her tuition and plans to attend the monthly meetings.

“I am very surprised to be selected for this scholarship considering the competition, and I believe it will aid me in my present and future career goals,” Kanthan said.

Kanthan, a senior majoring in advertising/public relations, is an international student from Singapore who came to Evangel University in the fall of 2011. Since arriving at Evangel, she has been involved with Excalibur, Evangel University’s yearbook, as both assistant advertising manager and advertising manager. She currently works in the public relations office at Evangel University.

“I am very pleased that Ms. Kanthan received this remarkable scholarship. She is well-deserving of such an honor and the financial support,” said Nancy Pace-Miller, assistant professor of communication and faculty adviser for the Excalibur yearbook.

“Ms. Kanthan has worked as the advertising manager for the yearbook for two years and has been one of my most successful account executives. She is an outstanding student, a wonderful person and a dedicated employee.”

The SWMO PRSA considered involvement in communications, academic standing, and campus and community involvement when choosing the recipient of the scholarship, and applicants were required to begin the 2013-2014 academic year as a junior or senior or a graduate student pursuing a degree in communication, public relations or a closely related area.
