Evangel University to host 15th annual Heritage of Hymns Concert

Published on Oct 6, 2023 by Erin Hedlun

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Evangel University will again host the Heritage of Hymns Concert, presented by the Messiah Project, on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in Spence Chapel.

The public is invited to attend, and admission is free.

The concert will feature a community choir, orchestra, Children’s Chorus of Springfield, a bell choir, and Ballet Excelsior of Houston, Texas.

This year’s concert theme is “A Harvest Celebration” and will feature an organ prelude at 6 p.m. The event will feature vocal and orchestral arrangements of familiar hymns and choral works, along with choreography.

The Messiah Project is a Christian fine arts organization headquartered in Springfield, Missouri whose visual, dramatic, and musical productions celebrate the Jewish and Christian heritage at the core of artistic culture. The organization was founded in 1992, and the Heritage of Hymns concert series began in 2008.

The concert brings together choir members from several churches across the local community. Heritage of Hymns provides an opportunity for Christians from different congregations to come together to celebrate faith through music.

Dr. Nathan Cornelius, an accomplished educator and conductor, will serve as artistic director with Dr. Heather Nelson, local vocologist, as co-director. Dr. Larry Dissmore, Evangel’s director of orchestral activities and professor of violin and viola, will serve as orchestra director.
