Tell us about your career and what you do now.
I served15 years in law enforcement, with the bulk spent as a Deputy Sheriff of the Taney County Sheriff’s office. Over 12 of those years, I served as a Field Training officer, Taser Instructor, School Resource Officer and was a member of the Special Response Team. In 2013, I led our department in DWI arrests. On September 2016, I was shot on duty while serving a warrant at a residence. After multiple surgeries, blood transfusions, over a week in the hospital, tons of psychological and physical therapy, I was medically retired.
In 2017, I received a Purple Heart citation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Peace officer of the Year for the Tri-Lakes Region.
What is your favorite memory from Evangel?
Professor Cirtin’s Sociology Class and the men’s basketball team winning the NAIA National Championship.
How did Evangel help you identify/develop your calling?
I started at Evangel pursuing a Psychology degree and then switched my interest to Criminal Justice after attending Professor Cirtin’s Sociology course. So, I finished my 60 credits and applied for the Springfield Police Academy. I was accepted and left Evangel just to come back and juggle career, marriage and three children. Thank the Lord for Degree Completion, which gave me the ability to take online classes. I graduated 2014 with a degree in Business Management.
How did your experience at Evangel prepare you for life after graduation?
Evangel broadened my horizons and introduced me to Christians from all over the country. My college experience helped shape me into the Christ follower that I am today.
What advice would you give a current student preparing for the workforce?
Don’t expect work to be easy. There are challenges at every corner. Stay uplifted and constantly seek Jesus. Doors and windows open as well as close all the time. Most of all, put your trust in Jesus not people because, though people will often let you down, Jesus never waivers.
What would you look for if you were able to hire new graduates from Evangel?
I have a close friend, Grant Boyer, that I attend church with and our boys play sports together. He and his wife, Sara, are excellent examples of sacrifice and love. They both attended Evangel and I would compare every application to see how it matches up to the character of these dear friends.
