Evangel professor presents at national college media convention

Published on Nov 14, 2013 by Irene Kanthan

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. –– Nancy Pace-Miller, assistant professor of communication at Evangel University, presented a workshop at the 2013 National College Media Convention, co-sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and the College Media Association.

The convention was held in New Orleans, La., Oct. 23-27, 2013.

Pace-Miller’s workshop was titled “Using Your Strengths.” Attendees included student media advisers and students.

Evangel University takes a “strengths-based” approach to leadership education, using Gallup’s StrengthsFinder 2.0. StrengthsFinder is an exam that uses a series of questions and a list of 34 unique attributes – such as responsibility, adaptability and discipline – to rank which strengths each student exemplifies.

“At the beginning of their freshman year, all Evangel students take the StrengthsFinder exam to learn which ones are in their top five,” Pace-Miller said.

These top five strengths are used in many ways throughout a student’s time at Evangel.

“The strengths-based approach to leadership has been very successful at Evangel,” Pace-Miller said. “There is power in focusing on one’s strengths rather than worrying about weaknesses.”

This is the third time Pace-Miller has been invited to speak at the national convention.

She currently serves as the communication department’s internship coordinator and faculty adviser to Excalibur, Evangel’s student-produced yearbook. She has served as a full-time faculty member since 1999 and teaches undergraduate courses as well as the communication department’s degree completion program for adult learners.

The Associated Collegiate Press is the oldest and largest national membership organization for college student journalists. More than 20,000 students are staffers at ACP member publications.

The College Media Association is an organization for advisers of collegiate media programs with more than 850 members from coast to coast. ACP and CMA attract thousands of college students and advisers to their national college media conventions.
