SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Dr. Mike Rakes, fifth president of Evangel University, and Darla Rakes, ambassador to students and donors at EU, will be among the slate of featured speakers at the 2023 General Council of the Assemblies of God (AG). The biennial meeting that brings together AG leaders, ministers, missionaries, and students from across the country will be held July 31 – August 4 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.
The Rakes will share the stage during the main session on Friday, August 4.
Dr. Mike Rakes serves as the fifth president of Evangel University with his wife, Pastor Darla Rakes, by his side. Prior to his appointment as president, he and Darla served as co-pastors of Winston Salem First, a diverse church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Rakes is a graduate of Central Bible College and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (AGTS). He holds a number of degrees including a Doctor of Ministry degree from Biola University.
Darla is completing her D.Min. at AGTS and is currently working on her first book, which will focus on the topic of biblical identity, slated for release at the end of 2024.
Dr. Mike’s most recent book, “Surrendered & Unafraid: The Flourishing of Faith During Seasons of Suffering,” details the family’s journey through the passing of their daughter, Whitney, from a rare blood cancer at the age of 27.
Under Rakes’ leadership, Evangel saw a record-breaking 2022-2023 fiscal year giving total of over $27 million, an 11% increase in student enrollment, and the university’s first major building campaign since 2009.

General Council 2023 marks the 60th such event in the fellowship’s history, and the theme is “Our Church Our Family.” General Council includes business meetings, elections, services, ministry training, networking, and the National Youth Conference and Fine Arts Festival.
