Provides an overview of Islam, including its beginnings and expansion, the beliefs and practices of formal and folk Islam, Islamic sects, the identity of women, Islam in the United States, global Islam today and bridges for communicating with Muslims.

MCC 554 Folk Islam and Power Encounter

Studies the development of popular Islam within the world of official Islam, emphasizing an understanding and analysis of the felt needs of ordinary Muslims. Special attention will be given to the role of spiritual power encounter as a tool in evangelizing Muslims.

MCC 552 Women in Islam (8:00 a.m. – Noon)

Examines the identity and role of women in historic and contemporary Islam as taught by the Qur’an and Hadith and throughout society, covering various cultural contexts.

July 6-July 10
MSS 639 SP. STU.: Business as Mission in Islamic Context (1:00 – 5:00 p.m.)
Instructor: Dr. Robert Stefan
Credits: 3
The course will survey Islamic teaching on business topics such as possessions and wealth and trade and commerce. Islamic sources to be examined will include the Qur’an, the hadith, sharia law and selected periods in Islamic history. The global move toward Islamic finance and the views of influential Islamists will also be analyzed.
Individuals seeking to do business in Muslim-majority nations would benefit from such an understanding as would those seeking to establish relationships with Muslims in the marketplace.


The professors have all served as missionaries in Muslim-majority nations and have practical insights into ministry to Muslims. As experts in this field, they bring years of practical ministry with Muslims into the classroom.

Dr. Jeff Nelson
Jeff and Janelle Nelson are Assemblies of God missionaries to Africa. Jeff currently trains Bible school leaders across Africa through Africa’s Hope and oversees Africa Library Services, equipping Bible schools with educational resources to facilitate training and is a teacher and writer. From 2001-2016 they planted twenty-two churches, led KAG EAST University in Kenya, and have taken students out to unreached peoples in Africa. They served as pastors in North Dakota and Alaska prior to entering missions. Jeff served as Missionary in Residence at Evangel University and AGTS from 2016-2020.

Dr. Robert Stefan
Robert Stefan worked as a Wall Street investment banker and entrepreneur for about twenty years, after which he and his wife devoted their time and energy to advancing the Kingdom of God as appointed missionaries in various foreign mission fields, including in Muslim-majority countries. Dr. Stefan pioneered AGWM’s efforts to incorporate business into their foreign mission strategies and has worked to increase the financial sustainability of national churches. He earned a PhD in Islamic Studies and has become an expert on Islamic business. He is currently writing a Biblical theology of wealth creation.

Dr. Donna Krstulovich
Donna Krstulovich was born in Iran to expatriate parents and raised in the diverse cultures of the Philippines, Nepal, Pakistan, and Malaysia. She served as a minister to internationals before leaving the United States to work among Muslims in South and Central Eurasia for sixteen years. She and her husband Steve served in Central Eurasia for three years before joining Global Initiative: Reaching Muslim Peoples as International Trainers. She holds a BA in Missions, an MA in Intercultural
Communication, and a PhD in Intercultural Studies.

Michael Langford
Michael and Sharyl Langford pastored for 6-years in Washington state and Montana prior to entering AG World Missions in 1987. For the next 30+ years, they ministered across the Philippine Islands on behalf of Filipino Muslim peoples. Since 1997, they have stewarded the Institute of Islamic Studies at Asia Pacific Theological Seminary in Baguio City, Philippines, with over 1,200 total participants representing 63 nations. In 2019, they joined Global Initiative: Reaching Muslim Peoples.

The week of June 29-July 3 or July 6-10 is considered “Residency” and is taken in conjunction with the requirements of earning the 3-credits. A student will have pre-course work, residency, and post-course work.)
