Springfield, Mo. — Evangel University will host an all-day seminar, Compassion for the Suicidal Soul, designed for clinical mental health professionals, school counselors and ministerial staff Friday, Feb. 15, 2019. More than 180 have registered in advance for this sold-out event.
Co-sponsored by Evangel’s Center for Compassion and its Graduate Counseling Program, the training will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“Multiple breakout sessions are designed to provide skills to address suicidal thinking in a myriad of environments, including school, church, family and work,” said Dr. Donna Washburn, director of the Center for Compassion.
The Compassion for the Suicidal Soul seminar will be held in the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary at Evangel University, 1435 N. Glenstone Ave., on the north end of the Evangel campus.
“Attendees will gain understanding of the basic suicidal risk factors, learn how to apply prevention strategies, practice assessment techniques, develop treatment and response plans, and create compassionate management strategies,” said Washburn.
“We will also discuss how to integrate an individual with a suicidal history into their school, church, family and/or work community,” she said.
The cost for registration was $30 for the public.
Due to an overwhelmingly positive response from Springfield area professionals, advanced registration was closed as of Jan. 23.

Evangel also offers an advanced certificate program
For those who missed the one day event, or now desire advanced training, Evangel also offers an online Certificate in Crises Intervention & Suicide Prevention. The program consists of four online, accelerated courses of five weeks each.
The courses may be taken either for a continuing education certificate, or for college credit toward a degree at Evangel.
“The 12-credit hour program is much broader in scope,” according to Dr. Washburn. “It is designed to help one understand common crisis issues for clients to include situations involving domestic violence, sexual assault, family relationships, natural disasters, mental illness, health-related crises, substance abuse and stress.”
